About us

A National and International Mandate

Used Tyres Producer Responsibility of Nigeria (UTPRON) is exclusively authorized by NESREA, an agency of the Federal Government to coordinate and manage end-of-life tyres in Nigeria. Through education, enforcement and regulation, we ensure that tyre manufacturers, importers, distributors, retailers, scrap tyre collectors, recyclers, vulcanizers and logistics companies are in compliance with Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) program. Nigeria is signatory to EPR global best practices for environmental protection to drive a circular economy. This is enforced through Act No 20 of 2007 by the National Assembly establishing NESREA

Recycling

This include working with existing recyclers to adopt eco-friendly measures as well as working with producers and manufacturers of tyres to set up more tyre recycling plants and centers across the country. This will be fed by an incentive based scrap tyre collection system

Reward and Incentives

The UTPRON will coordinate an incentive based system designed to reward vehicle owners thereby encouraging them to return waste tyres. Also, the UTPRON will work to ensure that tire dealers, distributors, automobile repairers, transport companies and organizations with large vehicle fleet receive certain incentives for their efforts in collecting waste tires.

Sensitization

The UTPRON will lead an aggresive sensitization campaign to educate the pblic on the dangers of indiscriminate dumping and disposal of waste tyres.

UTPRON

To manage the collection and recovery of end-of-life tyres through the most economic solutions, our organization introduced and manages the following initiatives

Quality Tyres Initiative

The UTPRON will work with producers and manufacturers towards committing to producing durable tyres with a longer lifespan as tyres with a longer life span will not be disposed of as waste quickly

#EndTyrePollution Campaign

Our organization has embarked on public advocacy and conducts outreach campaigns to create awareness through direct engagement activities with partners and stakeholders at all levels.

Technical Information

We work with tyre producers and manufacturers associations to offer technical information on end-of-life tyre management, organize and host used-tyres conferences for regulators, recyclers, industry and other stakeholders

Tyres For Life Program

Through the Tyres4life program, we will coordinate the collection of end-of-life tyres by organizing community based clean up events at dumpsites, rivers, lakes and other public waterways.

Incentives

In this incentive scheme, we will promote the collection of scrap tyres by offering a reward to people for every scrap tyre they return, collect and brought for recycling in the recycling centers/plants

Recyclepreneur Program

A training programme ( sponsored by tyre producers and manufacturers) aimed at training young persons on eco-friendly methods of recycling waste tyres and converting them into other products. (Waste to Wealth)

F.A.Q

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is UTPRON all about?

UTPRON is an organization approved by the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) to manage the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) program on used tyres in Nigeria. The Initiative is geared towards promoting the adoption and implementation of green and eco-friendly measures of recycling end of life tyres.

  • Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is a policy initiative that aims to shift the responsibility for managing post-consumer waste from local governments and taxpayers to the producers of the products themselves. The EPR concept recognizes that manufacturers, importers, and distributors of products have a significant role to play in reducing waste, conserving resources, and protecting the environment. Under an EPR program, producers are required to take responsibility for the end-of-life management of their products, including collecting, transporting, and recycling or disposing of the waste generated from their products. The goal of EPR is to incentivize manufacturers to design products that are easier to recycle or that use fewer resources, as well as to encourage the development of recycling infrastructure and markets for recycled materials. EPR programs have been implemented for a range of products, including electronics, packaging, batteries, and tires. The initiative has been successful in many countries, as it helps to promote sustainable production and consumption practices, reduce the environmental impact of waste, and shift the costs of waste management away from taxpayers and local governments.

  • The EPR program on used tires in Nigeria benefits the environment by reducing the amount of used tires that end up in landfills, which can take hundreds of years to decompose and leach toxic chemicals into the soil and water. By encouraging tire producers to take responsibility for their products, the program also helps to promote sustainable production and consumption practices, reduce the environmental impact of waste, and conserve natural resources.

  • Manufacturers, importers, distributors, retailers and recyclers of tyres. Waste Tyre Coollectors, Associations, Academics, Transport/Logistics Companies, Public/Private Agencies, NGOs can also become members.

  • Individuals and businesses can support the EPR program on used tires by properly disposing of their used tires and avoiding illegal dumping. They can also choose to purchase tires from manufacturers who are committed to the EPR program and use products made from recycled tires. By doing so, they can help to reduce the environmental impact of waste and support sustainable production and consumption practices
